“G’day sweetie!” Morwenna kissed Kreyna on the mouth and crushed her to her ample bosom. “It’s been an age—how the hell are you?”
“A damn sight better for seeing you, you old tart. Why didn’t you return my calls?”
“Whaddaya mean, not return your calls? I was in Darwin all week for work, rang in, got your messages, rang back and left a message every time. Can’t do better than that, can I now?”
Kreyna stepped back and put her hands on her hips. “I called and left a message this morning. Did you get it?”
“After I got back. I’d been down to the servo buying milk for brekkie. Then I rang and left you a message. Don’t tell me we’ve been playing phone tag all week?”
“Is Helios still here? Any chance of a cuppa?”
“He worked late last night and stayed at his mother’s. And yes, I’ll put the kettle on.”
Kreyna sat at the old oak table in the tiny room that purported to be a kitchen. Morwenna ladled loose leaf tea into a pot shaped like a clucky chicken, ceramic eggs oozing from beneath fat, glazed white feathers—the boiling water gurgled and steamed on the way into its belly. Over a piping hot mug of orange pekoe, Kreyna reported that she had not actually received any messages—at least, none she could detect. She told Morwenna about the trip to Melbourne and the news that she was being posted to Fort Meade. When she had to explain someone died because of her, she dissolved into tears.
Morwenna looked solemn and cuddled her, tsking until Kreyna composed herself. Finally, she said she’d met Declan for coffee that morning. Morwenna puckered her mouth in an effort not to grin too widely, but her dancing eyes gave her away.
“Well, you have had a time of it, girlfriend. There’re a few things that don’t jell, particularly the disappearing messages—it’s bizarre. I know your job is frightfully hush-hush, but could you be in over your head?”
Kreyna took a deep breath. “Paranoid Scorpio or not, I think I’m being watched.”
The two women sat in silence, sipping tea—such a reassuringly normal activity.
“What I can’t suss out is why. The organization is very frugal with its resources. This kind of surveillance costs money—time, money and staff. Why they’re paying attention to someone like me, I can’t imagine. I have limited access to top secret material and most of my training has been theoretical, so far. In a nutshell, I know zip.”
Something rubbed against Kreyna’s shins. She looked under the table and Merlin, a sleek black tomcat, said, “Mwah, per-prow?”
“I fed you breakfast an hour ago,” Morwenna said, rising from her chair. “This cat’s bulimic, I swear.” She took a small plastic package of diced kangaroo meat from the fridge and spooned some into a bowl. Merlin stretched up, attempting to claw it off the bench. “Impatient puss. Keep your fur on—it’s coming.” She placed the bowl on a mat in the corner of the kitchen. Merlin purred and ate at the same time.
